Morgan Breland accepted a donation from President Gary Schroeder of the Kiwanis Organization, to help finance her dancing to London.

Public comment was heard regarding a moratorium on the recreational use of marijuana in Columbia County. The Commissioners approved Ordinance 2013-02, establishing an immediate moratorium on the recreational use of marijuana for up to 12 months.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

September 23, 1998

Frank Jamison, who serves on the Chamber of Commerce's Christmas Kickoff committee, has been involved with securing the Community Christmas Tree which is annually displayed in Flour Mill Park, which Pacific Power and Light would cut down and set it up. Bette Lou Crothers and her husband Gene had a tree they were willing to donate. First Federal allowed it to be planted on their property at Flour Mill Park and PP&L paid for having it moved. It was transplanted in April creating a permanent living Christmas tree.

4-H Style Revue top award winners. Modeling winners-Sara Cunnington, Jamie Fletcher, Kristen Richter, Kassandra Demaris, Crystal Bruce, Corrie Gagnon and Anne Luce.

Top Construction winners-Stacie Talbott, Brooke Hoon, Whitney White, Kassandra Demaris, Audrey Bensel, Corrie Gagnon, Anne Luce and Gretchen Richter. Judges for the event were Sharon Welch, Eleanor Bergstrom and Dee Dee Wolf.

Fifty Years Ago

September 27, 1973

Two Dayton citizens, pledging lifelong allegiance to America, became naturalized American citizens at a special ceremony before Asotin County Superior Judge Patrick McCabe. Both are natives of India. Dr. and Mrs. Arulanthu J. Pandian, who is a general practitioner, took the oath with three Clarkston residents.

The Blue Mountain Sno-Mo-Club of Dayton has been recognition in the 1972-73 Snowmobiler Awards Program sponsored by the Successful Farming magazine. The club received an engraved plaque citing their outstanding acts of public service involving snowmobiles.

Jan Turner of Dayton was among 22 high school students from throughout the United States who have been chosen to receive $500 career scholarships awarded by the Green Giant Foundation, the charitable arm of Green Giant Company.

A Dayton 4-H Club youth, Robin Patrick, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Patrick, was selected as the first alternate in the state 4-H photography project during activities at the Western Washington Fair. Robin earned the recognition for her outstanding 4-H photography work and her performance during an interview at the fair.

Marine Pvt. James B. Ogden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gunnar Jensen of Waitsburg, graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

September 23, 1948

At a meeting of farmers and sportsmen association members agreed on posting all land in Columbia County through cooperation with land owners. (2) Allow hunting of Chinese pheasants and other game birds; (3) No hunting without permission to given by the owner or lessee; (4) To prosecute for trespass anyone hunting on days not designated or without permission.

George Oliver, 4-H member from the Dayton Barnyard Club, placed highest in the judging contest held at Pomeroy with a score of 440 out of a possible 500. Darrel Startin came in second with 425 and Ronald Douglas and Marvin Melton tied for third place with 395.

Sam Oliver, member of the Columbia-Walla Walla counties draft board, announced that all 18-year-olds must register for the draft within five days after their 18th birthday. Registrations to be taken by Wallace Payne in the office of the Columbia County Grain Growers. Two hundred and forty men and boys within the draft group have registered in Columbia County.

September 23, 1898

B.L. Dickinson, son of W.T. Dickinson, of Galva, Illinois, is here on sheep business, being interested with G. F. Jackson in that line. G.F. Jackson and Mr. Dickinson when to the mountains for the purpose of sorting out 3,000 lambs for the eastern market which is expected to be made about first of October. Mr. Dickinson is also interested in the Cummings Creek mines with Jackson Bros.
