Bulldog run at Colton Wildcats falls short

COLTON–The Wildcats jumped to an early lead and survived a big Bulldog second half to notch a SE1B Wheat Division win 48-42 here Saturday, December 16. Dayton is 0-3 in league and 0-6 overall.

The Dawgs faced Touchet on the home maple this week, registering the team's first win of the season, 49-46. They wrap up the 2023 portion of the schedule this Friday at Rosalia versus the Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves and venture to Garfield-Palouse on January 5 after Christmas Break.

"We played hard," commented Head Coach Clayton Strong, "especially in the second half. We have things we have to clean up that will help us."

Six-foot, two-inch freshman Denver Hutchens swished a trio of treys in the third quarter, and another in the fourth, to score a game-high 24 points and power the Bulldogs' second-half comeback attempt where the team carved away at the 15-point halftime deficit to trail by just seven points, 35-28, after the third period.

Colton's Matthew Reisenaur hit two threes and a bucket in the fourth to keep the Dawgs at bay and ensure a Wildcat win. He counted 17 points along with team-high Tanner Boerlocher with 22.

Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs with 23, partially offset by 19 steals by the team. Cayle Davis made six steals, and Hutchens and Colton Steinhoff both counted four.

Both Hutchens and Carson Potter were rebound leaders with seven each, Raymond Yutzy snaring six and Jack Zanger hooking five.

Yutzy led in the assist department with three.

Dayton started the game ice cold, scoring just four in the first stanza, buckets by Hutchens and Potter. In the second quarter, Hutchens hit two and Yutzy chipped in a field goal but the Wildcats tallied up 25 first-half points and led by 25-10 at the break.

The third quarter is when Hutchens got the three-point looks and delivered. Yutzy also hit a basket and Steinhoff and Zanger both added a pair of free throws as the Dawgs slashed Colton's lead to seven points, 35-28.

Dayton outscored Colton 14-13 in the final quarter. Hutchens made two baskets and a three pointer and the diversion he created opened Cayle Davis for a couple buckets and Steinhoff for a basket.
