POMEROY––League-leading Pomeroy keelhauled the young Dayton Bulldogs 64-16 here Saturday, Jan. 13, the Pirate defense short circuiting most of Dayton's offensive attack.
Back-to-back home games are on the schedule this weekend against two Whitman County teams, Gar-Pal and SJEL.
"We got beat by a superior team," commented Head Coach Clayton Strong following the Pomeroy game. "They are who we are aspiring to be. We had glimpses of good things, but we need to work to string more of them together."
Pomeroy jumped to a 21-5 lead in the first quarter, Dayton's Raymond Yutzy swished a three pointer and Colton Steinhoff hitting a bucket for the Bulldogs. The Pirates shared scoring duties in the first with Braxton McKeirnan hitting a pair of buckets, Kyzer Herres three of four at the foul line with a basket and game-high scorer Trace Roberts sinking a basket and two free throws on his way to a 15-point game.
Pirate defense squelched any Dawg offensive effort with just five shots being attempted and the only point from a Steinhoff gifter. Roberts, Ollie Severs and Herres each chipped in a pair of baskets in the second quarter as the Pirates took a 39-6 lead at the break.
In the second half, again Pomeroy kept Bulldog offensive efforts to a minimum. Steinhoff's bucket was one of four attempts in the quarter while Pirate Roberts scored seven and Jacob Reisinger, McKeirnan, Slaybaugh and Reggie Ott wrapped the fourth quarter scoring for the solid win.
In the fourth quarter Carson Potter drained a three and Jordan McCowen hit a basket and a trey.
Facing Mac-Hi on Jan. 9, the Dawgs were with the Pioneers in the first quarter, finishing ahead 13-11. But Mac-Hi's Giovanny Sandoval-Robles caught fire with 13 points in the second stanza and with game-high scorer Alejandor Sandoval-Gutierrez's steady hand through the first three periods, and then Dayton's ice-cold fourth quarter, kept the game out of reach.
"Our response to a tough weekend was a very good one," Strong said of the team's play against Mac-Hi. "We played them at a jamboree in November. They beat us pretty soundly and to keep the game to within about 10 until really late, I was proud of the boys.
"We did a better job of taking care of the ball and did better with sharing it," he said.
Second-quarter treys by Potter, Zanger and Davis helped keep Dayton in the running but a two-point fourth quarter was disheartening.
