Dayton's fifth graders last ski day at Bluewood this season was Del Avery's last day of work. Del shared that he wanted to keep working long enough to drive our young skiers to the Mountain.

The Annual Walla Walla Elks Lodge No. 287 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Competition winners were first place with $1,000 scholarship is Toby Latin-Stoermer; third place with $500 scholarship Brigitte Richter. First and second place winners will qualify for the District, District winners will qualify the state competition, and the top 12 state winners will receive national scholarships.

Cadet Sergeant Jeptha Livingston White, 18, son of Mrs. Rebeca B. Martin, and a senior at the Marine Military Academy, was named to the President's List for maintaining an academic grade point average of 3.75.

February 14, 1974

The Washington State Board of Health passed a regulation requiring parents to provide schools with proof that their children are immunized against Diphtheria, tetanus, polio, Rubella (German Measles) and measles either by having had the disease or immunizations. This regulation includes children in public, private, parochial, nursery school and day care and mini day care centers.

The Dayton High School Debate Team, coached by Don Donahue, took first place in a District 9 debate tournament in Pullman. Dayton debaters participating were Mary Sue Evers, Joe Givaudon, Craig Harshman, Betty Kenyon, Janet Lathim, Lori Powers, Glenda Roff and Dave Woolson.

A voluntary gasoline rationing program has been effect across the state since February 11. The rationing program is based on the last digit of an individual's license plate and will allow those with even numbers to buy gas on even calendar dates and odd numbers on odd calendar dates.

The laying of the foundation for the new Delany Memorial Building, Carl Rowe Jr. subcontracted the preliminary excavation, A. Ritchie and Co. of Walla Walla is constructing the building, with a completion date of June 14, 1974.

Sunday Storm Raises Havoc with Transportation Routes. All county roads suffered, as did state highways and bus schedules, other than from Lewiston to Walla Walla were cancelled for the day. One of the local school busses wasn't able to make its rounds and the others were short of their usual loads of juvenile passengers. The prize drift located on the Eckler Mt. route after the last cut by the snow plow shows it 18 ft. deep.

No school at Star, Monday because of the snow storm of Sunday, Mrs. Donald Knight, on of teachers, who lives up Crall Hollow, couldn't get down to the school because of the snow-blocked road.

February 11, 1899

Little Rock, Arkansas-Governor Jones will send a special message to the legislature dealing with the smallpox situation which now exists in half a dozen counties in epidemic preporations. Guards are watching all wagon roads and trains to prevent any person to enter the town from any locality where smallpox exist.

Starbuck, Wash.-The Signal will not be published this week on account of the serious illness of Mr. Stoddard's little daughter, who is not expected to live.
