Hunter Griffen wrestled his way to a first-place medal in the 220 lb. division at Bi-State last weekend.

LEWISTON–Dayton Middle School wrestler Hunter Griffen took top honors in the 220-lb. division at Bi-State Championship 2024 here Saturday, March 2.

"This group of kids has been awesome to coach," said Head Coach Carlos Norris. Norris is assisted by Lucas Collier.

"They have made this season really fun," Norris said.

"All year long, people at meets have been telling me how great our community it," Norris said, "and how proud the community should be of our kids." Norris pointed to a message he received from a coach from Asotin:

"The Dayton Middle School wrestling team has shown immense growth as the season has progressed," Asotin Coach Caleb Smith wrote to Norris. "The coaches have done an excellent job at developing the skill set of their kids. It's plain to see that the young men on that team really care about the way they represent their community. I have no doubts that the Dayton wrestling team is in good hands for years to come. Well done all around! Let me know if I can do anything to help."

Griffen opened against Max Storm of Jenifer M.S., Lewiston, pinning him at :23. He then pinned Adolfo Ascencio-Bautis of Sacajawea M.S., at :15 and faced Cody York of Grangeville, Idaho, winning by fall at :42.

Garret Yost finished fifth, first pining Colt Greene of Lapwai. He lost to a Jenifer wrestler, and in the consolation bracket, Yost and teammate Luke Collier met in the "Blood Round," the contest for third or fourth, Norris said. Collier finished fourth, pinned by Jude Kirkiely of Asotin, and Yost fifth.

Norris wagered his head of hair if anyone won a medal at Bi-State. Later this month, Norris's head will be shaved at a pep assembly.
