DAYTON–The Parks and Recreation District Pool Board (PB) is planning a community meeting for April 18 at 6 p.m. at the Elementary School multi-purpose room. They are seeking public input on what is needed and wanted for a community pool.

The board would like to encourage the public to come out and participate and express what is important to them, but also understand that at this event they will add some parameters to keep expectations realistic. "Everybody gets to have a voice, but then it does get narrowed down to what we can afford, said Dianne McKinley, Parks and Recreation District Pool Board Chair. "We are not going to have everything that everyone puts a dot on and that is important to convey," said Dianne McKinley.

The event will also include guest speakers from the YMCA in Walla Walla to give their experience in operating several of the pools in the Valley. The PB will be using community input to develop an action plan to complete a full feasibility study, which will be needed to acquire funding for the project.

In other business, the PB approved the draft of their Board Rules and Policies and wrote a short report for the County Cooperative Park Master Plan.

McKinley has been attending meetings with the Club to support their Summer Swim Program. Currently The Club transports youngsters to a swimming pool in Prescott, Wash. The meetings include representatives from Dayton, Waitsburg, Prescott, and Walla Walla. They are working to get students registered for lifeguard training with the Walla Walla YMCA. "I am so impressed on how they are getting this pulled together," said McKinley.

A Prescott Parks and Recreation Board member, Doug Venn brought the idea of a Touchet Valley Aquatics Association to the Dayton Parks and Rec Board. He hopes that Dayton, Waitsburg, and Prescott can work together to collaborate for resources, support, contractors, etc. The board supports this idea, and stated when it [pool] is up and going, they will choose a board representative to participate in the association.
