The Dayton High School FFA Chapter members Jennifer Warren, Bonnie Laib, Matthew Warren, Cal Martin, Cruz Ramirez, Anissa Holmberg, Levi Laib, Zane Patton and Lexie Ramirez assisted Walla Walla Pheasants Forever by planting pheasant habitat friendly plants–250 trees and shrubs–on Frame property along Highway 261.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 2, 1999

Students enrolled in the Dayton Early Childhood Education program have been learning about moving machines and community helpers in their pre-school classes. Students in both classes were treated to a field trip that involved riding in real "moving machines" in the county shop area.

The Dayton High School Bulldogs' Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) team chewed up the competition during State competition in Spokane bringing home eight championship awards. FBLA advisor Rob Moore said "all first-place winners qualify to compete during the national FBLA conference to be held in Chicago and this will be the Dayton FBLA's ninth trip to national completion in the past 12 years."

Local woman Sharon Walker will be delivering hand-made diapers and quilts, made by local women, to a Romanian orphanage. Her diaper project was started when she visited two orphanages and was appalled at the kind of diapers, large pieces of fabric tied on the baby, being used.

Fifty Years Ago

May 2, 1974

Ron Groom, a local farmer, was recently elected to the board of trustees of Judson Baptist College in Portland, Ore. Groom, who farms with his father, Joe Groom in Huntsville, attended local schools and is an alumnus of Judson.

Michael W. Coble, a Washington State University junior majoring in education, is student teaching in the Spokane area during the second half of the spring semester. Coble graduated from Dayton High and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Coble.

Senate Page Meri Hurst, with her sponsor Senator Huber Donohue (D-9th District), is at the special session of the Legislature. Meri is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Hurst.

Two students from Dayton High School will perform in the district's annual Solo and Ensemble Contest. Margaret Whitmore, freshman, will play a flute solo, and a Sonata in F Major by Telemann, receiving a "1" rating. Tony Reynolds, junior played a French Horn solo, Ave Maria by Gounod, receiving a "2" rating.

Tony Reynolds, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Reynolds; Mike Dingle, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Dingle Jr.; Stan Stockton, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Stockton, were selected by the local Kiwanis, Eagles, and American Legion as delegates to Boys State to be held at Central Washington State College in Ellensburg.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

April 28, 1949

Elna Lorranine Bosley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Bosley, is one of the Farmerettes for the South Eastern Washington Fair, this fall. Elna is a senior at Dayton High School.

Sixty-two students were on the high school honor roll for the third quarter ending March 30, according to announcement by Principal Frank Clark. On the high honor roll were Freshmen Dorothy Morris and Ann Pool, Junior Ruth Hutchens and Senior Catherine Nelson.

About 50 Cubs and Blue Birds took part in the kite-flying contest, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Prizes were awarded in three divisions, construction, design and highest flying. Handling the event were Dr. Dick Trudgeon, Bob Lathrop, Bill Scott, Bob Johnson, Ralph Haasch, Ed Jewett and Deb Laughery.

The Dayton-Waitsburg chapter of the DeMolay, organized last November and sponsored by the Royal Arch Masons of Dayton, is for youths 14 to 21 and is expected to get its charter in the next month or so. Those serving are Fred Rankin, junior counselor; Howard Smith, treasurer; Bill Zuger, master counselor; Kenneth Gollihur, scribe, and Shelby Bly, senior counselor, the elective officers of Dr. Edwin H. Van Patten Chapter of DeMolay.

Secretary Alger has received a reply from General Otis for reinforcements proposed to be sent to relieve the volunteers. Order of Leaving the Philippines, the volunteers in the Philippines will return home in the order in which they sailed for Manila.
