Ten Years Ago

Dayton High School seniors Courtney Mings and Guy Spalinger were named recipients of the 2014 P.E.O. Citizenship Award, presented by Chapter BJ of Dayton.

The Dayton Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America did well at the recent state conference. Ian Smay placed first in Computer Applications. Taylor Frame was elected State Parliamentarian and Keelin Hovrud is S.E. Region Vice President.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 5, 1999

The new moderate and middle income family housing development scheduled to be built in Dayton is on track. The housing project, located at Mustard Creek and the end of Fifth Street, will include three site-built three story buildings containing 25 apartments.

Bumpercrop, a Dayton gourmet food company which started with grandma's mustard and ended up on QVC, now belongs to an out-of-town partnership that will operate in Bellevue. Nancy Turner, who started Bumpercrop in her home in 1985, said the business had simply became more that she and husband Chuck Turner could handle. Bumpercrop closed the doors at the new facility which the Port of Columbia had recently built for them.

Two area students, Outstanding Junior Achievers Catherine Carolyn Schuck and Mason Aaron Mendel, received scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each at the Washington State Mason's ceremony held at the Masonic Temple in Dayton. The two scholarships were of ten such scholarships given in the entire state.

Fifty Years Ago

May 9, 1974

Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Chick) Masoner are the new owners of Chick's Auto Electric, formerly Elmer Young Electric Company. The Masoners are moving here from Walla Walla where he has been employed by Walla Walla Motor Supply for the past 21 years.

Mrs. Eleanor Miller, a teller with Seattle-First National Bank, was honored with a surprise party noting her 30th year with the institution. She was hired as a bookkeeper May 1, 1944, with the then Columbia National Bank.

Newly elected Dayton High School Associated Student Body (ASB) officers for 1974-75 are, President, Joe Givaudon; Vice President, Tony Reynolds; Secretary, Karla Von Cadow; Treasurer, Sheri Attebery and Assistant Treasurer, Roseann Eades.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

May 5, 1949

The Scout Cubs and Blue Birds who placed in the Kiwanis-sponsored kite flying contest are Marie Hatley, Edith Breedlove, John Drenckpohl, Conrad Hoskins, Kenneth Clapp, Sharon Beckley, Bill Scott, Fred Geist and Eddy Jording.

Maurice Roe, manager of the Columbia County Grain Growers received a shipment of soya bean seed, named Hawkeye, with about 15 growers are trying it out.

Peep Peep By The Thousands. Roy Williams said he had close on to five thousand chickens from seven weeks to 12 weeks old. The numbers varies as new baby chicks arrive and fryers and broilers move out. He butchers the poultry here and moves them out about 350 a week to Richland and three stores in Walla Walla.

About 49 years ago, the game of Golf was gaining popularity in Dayton because of the newly completed golf course at the fairgrounds.
