The Waitsburg Cardinal Track and Field team heading to the State Championships in Yakima are, from left, Brenton Segraves, Teegan Kenney, Blake French and Reuben Yutzy. The four are a unique blend of sprinters and throwers: Kenney and French are speedsters while Segraves also throws javelin and Yutzy puts the shot and high jumps.
RITZVILLE–It's fast times at Dayton High as the sprinters on the Dayton Track and Field team qualified for the State 1B meet in Yakima May 23, 24 and 25.
Four Dayton Bulldogs will be competing at state, with Tristan Rennaker, Hikaru Iwamoto, Solomon Brenner and Luke Winkler teaming up in the 4X100m. Relay. Iwamoto, an exchange student who has stood out as a sprinter this season, will also compete in the 100m. Dash.
Iwamoto will run in the first preliminary heat of the 100m. dash at 6:10 p.m. Thursday, May 23. The Relay Team will be in the first heat of the prelims at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 24.
"We had a great two days in Ritzville," commented Head Coach Dan Nechodom. "There were some disappointments and frustrations, and some positive surprises as well. We'll take a large group on to the State Championships in Yakima this week."
Several Bulldog competitors notched personal bests, Nechodom said. "For Dayton, Solomon Brenner pulled another second off his 300m Intermediate Hurdle time from last Wednesday," he said.
For Waitsburg, Teegan Kenney PRd in the 100m, as did Reuben Yutzy and Brenton Segraves in the shot put, and Brenton in the javelin, Nechodom said.
All three Waitsburg girls, Alyssa Hollingsworth, Makenna Barron and Marion Duncan, achieved PRs in the 800m, high jump and discus, respectively, he said.
From Waitsburg, Reuben Yutzy will compete in the high jump and shot put, Brenton Segraves in the shot put, and the relay team of Blake French, Teegan Kenney, Brenton Segraves and Reuben Yutzy will represent in the 4x100m relay.
