A Clash between Cayuse and army troops defined the Battle of 1858. Military journals reveal that there was a local clash in 1858 between the Cayuse Indians and Company F, of the Ninth Infantry at the confluence of the Patit Creek and the Touchet River, not far from where the bridge for Main Street/Highway 12 now crosses the river.
