TOKYO, Japan–In celebration of her fiftieth birthday, Miya Kajikuri and the Dayton Chronicle took a trip to visit her family here last September. But she and her family met adverse weather conditions, making for an interesting adventure.

"We started in Tokyo to visit family and then got on a cruise with stops in Osaka, Hiroshima, Karatsu, Busan (South Korea), Nigata, Aomori, and then back to Tokyo," said Kajikuri. "We were supposed to stop in Hakodate after Aomori, but had to sail directly to Tokyo to beat the super Typhoon that hit. We got the last plane out of Tokyo before the mandatory shutdown of all airports, trains, buses, taxis, etc. It was a great and fun trip, but also very crazy trying to avoid the typhoons and then lastly, the big super Typhoon. From left to right are Miya, Sashi, Diane, and Nathan Kajikuri. Her mother is part of the Sinkbeil family.
