DAYTON–A pair of three-way races were winnowed down to two candidates in this week's Primary Election. Advancing to the 2020 General Election will be 16th District Senate candidates Danielle Garbe Reser (D) and Perry Dozier (R), and Asotin, Columbia and Garfield Superior Court Judge candidates Brooke J. Burns and G. Scott Marinella.

In statewide contests, county voters followed the state trend with Democrat incumbent Jay Inslee (312 votes) and Republican Loren Culp (311), so facing off in November will be Inslee and Culp.

Local voters picked incumbent Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers (933) and Democrat Dave Wilson (175), following the trend among Fifth Congressional District voters.

Columbia County Commissioner Position 2

Columbia County voters set the stage for the November General Election runoff between incumbent Republican County Commissioner Mike Talbott and Republican challenger Marty Hall. In the General Election, all county voters will weigh in. Ballots from Commissioner District 2 counted 337 for Hall to 123 for Talbott. Hall received 73.26% to Talbott's 26.74% in unofficial election-night tallies.

Unopposed District 1 candidate Ryan R. Rundell received 379 votes.

Asotin, Columbia, Garfield Superior Court Judge

Clarkston attorney Brooke J. Burns and Dayton District Court Judge G. Scott Marinella both advance to the November 3 General Election on the strength of Burns receiving 3,209 votes and 50.63% of the vote count in Asotin, Columbia and Garfield counties versus Marinella's 2,138 votes and 33.73%. Candidate R. Victor Bottomly received 981 votes or 15.48%.

Burns was second to Marinella in both Columbia and Garfield counties, but those numbers didn't outweigh Burns's totals from Asotin County alone.

Burns overwhelmingly won Asotin County with 2,674 votes (60.88%) to Marinella's 894 votes (20.36%) and Bottomly's 817 votes and 18.6%. In Columbia County, Marinella outpaced Burns and Bottomly with 974 votes and 69.87%. Burns received 291 votes (20.88%) and Bottomly 126 votes and 9.04%. In Garfield County, Marinella was the top vote getter with 270 and 48.91% to Burns's 244 (44.2%) and Bottomly's 38 votes (6.88%).

16th District Senator

Advancing to the General Election will be Danielle Garbe Reser (D) and Perry Dozier (R). Garbe Reser received 7,547 votes and 37.13%; Dozier collected 6,788 votes (33.4%). Finishing in third was Rep. William "Bill" Jenkin (R) with 5,965 and 29.35%.

In Columbia County, voters gave former Walla Walla County Commissioner Perry Dozier (R) the nod with 674 votes and 48.01%. State Rep. William "Bill" Jenkin (R) garnered 403 votes and 28.7%, and Danielle Garbe Reser (D) received 327 votes, 23.29%.

In Walla Walla County, Garbe Reser led with 4,633 votes (42.29%) to Dozier's 4,060 (37.06%) and Jenkin's 2,256 (20.59%). In Franklin County, Garbe Reser collected 1,218 votes (45.43%), Jenkin followed with 849 (31.67%) and Dozier received 610 (22.75%). Benton County voters favored Jenkin with 2,457 (46.51%), followed by Dozier with 1,444 (27.33%) and Garbe Reser with 1.369 (25.91%).

16th District Representative (1)

Republican Mark Klicker received 13,108 votes (64.63%) to Democrat Frances Chvatal's 7,142 votes (35.21%). Klicker outpaced Chvatal by significant margins in Benton, Columbia and Walla Walla counties, edging her in Franklin County by 238 votes in election night returns. In Columbia County, Klicker received 1,074 to Chvatal's 319; in Benton, Klicker got 3,860 to Chvatal's 1,401; in Walla Walla Klicker received 6,721 to Chvatal's 4,207; and in Franklin, Klicker received 1,453 to Chvatal's 1,215.

16th District Representative (2)

Incumbent Republican Representative Skyler Rude and Democratic challenger Carly Coburn will move to the General Election after Rude received 13,594 votes to Coburn's 6,463. Rude won soundly in all counties, the closest margin being in Franklin where 268 votes separated the two. In Columbia County, Rude garnered 79.74% (1,110 votes) to Coburn's 280 (20.11%). In Walla Walla County, Rude received 7,143 votes (66.11%) and Coburn 3,641 (33.7%). In Franklin County, Rude's 1,451 votes (55.02%) compared to Coburn's 1,183 (44.86%), and in Benton County, Rude got 3,890 (73.86%) to Coburn's 1,359 (25.8%).

After the 8 p.m. deadline, an additional 173 ballots were collected from the Courthouse Alley drop box and the Auditor's Office ballot box. A few were expected to arrive from the Starbuck ballot box. Those ballots will be counted August 20 prior to certification, according to Auditor Anne Higgins.

The first unofficial count indicated that 1,451 ballots of the 2,710 registered voters, or 53.54%, had been counted. Auditor's Office election personnel counted 600 ballots on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.
