DAYTON–Campaign speech videos have been viewed and the vote tallied. Now, the local High School announces the Associated Student Body (ASB) officers for the 2020-21 school year: President Mackena Culley, Vice President Trista Villaro, Secretary Rose Burris-Ramirez, Treasurer Sadie Seney, Public Relations Manager Mason Finney, and Public Relations Assistant Manager Cassidy Laughery.
In spite of the unfortunate lack of extracurricular activities, student events, and gatherings this school year, there is still a need for ASB representatives. Luckily, the high school was able to hold an election last week.
Ordinarily, those who wish to run for an ASB position must declare their candidacy near the end of each school year, and the election and voting are held before the term ends. The elected students then begin their term throughout the summer, and the entire next school year.
The candidates give a speech in front of their fellow students, and the students each vote for their candidate of choice. However, Dayton High School was not able to hold an election at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, due to the sudden COVID-19 shutdown.
This year’s ASB election was a little different. Instead of standing before the entire student body to give a speech, those who wished to run for a position were asked to submit a campaign video explaining their goals and qualifications, much like an in-person speech. The candidates were allowed to include as little or as much information as they pleased, and given full creative opportunity.
Some took advantage of this option more or less than others, regardless each candidate took time, and effort to create their video. They were played for the students in their first period class on Friday, and votes were taken through an online form.
