What's New at School?

November 26, 2020

DAYTON–The Associated Student Body (ASB) has constantly been coming up with new ideas, and plans this year, always working at something new. Last week, the group was finally able to pursue a project, which has been on the table since the moment the officers were elected.

At the beginning of the year, ASB President Mackena Culley, expressed that she wanted to focus on the mental health of high school students. Since then, the ASB officers have been brainstorming, researching, and consulting mental health professionals to find information and ideas as to how they can bring awareness to this topic.

Last week was Mental Health Week at DHS. The intent of this project was to not only bring more attention to this issue, but also to help students find ways to help themselves. To give them resources, and ways to process their thoughts. They hope to help students to find more ways to relieve stress, and encourage them to take more care of themselves, and others.

At the beginning of each class day, the students were given a handout designed by the ASB. These handouts ranged from thought organizers, worry trees, true or false mental health question activities, and booklets on ways to maintain or improve mental health.

The ASB officers also created bulletin boards within the school, including more information and ideas as well. These handouts and bulletin boards have been both a fun and successful project for the ASB, as well as one they deem to be important. The next project for mental health, is going to be a “mental health first aid kit”, gifted to the students from the ASB, including many more stress relieving supplies for the students.
