Berg, Hovrud on General Election ballot; Berg has withdrawn from race but Hovrud has not

October 21, 2021

DAYTON–A candidate for Dayton School Board has withdrawn her candidacy in the 2021 General Election and another candidate whose name appears on the ballot for Dayton City Council Position No. 5 has not withdrawn.

Anna J. Berg’s name appears on the ballot for School Board Position No. 4, but she has withdrawn her candidacy. Contacted by the Dayton Chronicle, Berg said she has withdrawn from the race but did not do so in time for her name to be removed from the ballot.

Also on the ballot for the School Board Position No. 4 is Aneesha Dieu.

Berg said that she and her husband have two students attending Dayton Schools and, following former chairwoman Katie Leid’s resignation from the School Board, she decided to look into how she could help. She and Jeff McCowen were the two applicants interviewed for appointment to fill the vacancy, with McCowen being appointed.

When the election approached, Berg’s continued desire to help as a member of the school board prompted her to file for a position, Unbeknownst to her at the time, filing for public office includes disclosure of personal financial information to the Public Disclosure Commission and she opted to not submit it.

By the time she was aware of those requirements, the withdrawal date had passed. She said she informed the county, the school district, Supt. Guy Strot and others of her withdrawal.

Marchand Hovrud’s name is on the November 2 ballot as a candidate for City Council Position No. 5. Hovrud has not withdrawn her candidacy from the race.

Hovrud contacted the Chronicle prior to the October 14 edition going to press to explain her circumstances, including an anticipated change in residence.

Hovrud informed the Chronicle that she has accepted a job in another state and that the details of that situation weren’t available until recently.

“It was too late to withdraw and I’m still on the ballot,” Hovrud said in a text message. “If by some chance I won, I will withdraw and then the council can appoint someone.

“So, people do have choices still beyond what is on the ballot currently for that position,” she wrote.

“It’s been a hard decision to make and Dayton will be hard to leave. Again, I apologize-been burning the candle at both ends.”

Hovrud’s message was received after the October 14 edition was transmitted to the printer. The process was halted so that the information could be incorporated into the General Election story. Unfortunately, there was neither space nor time to amplify or make prominent this information.
