DAYTON–High School has finally made it to the second half of the year, but not without difficulty. There have been many trials and tribulations since the beginning of December. Before the school went on winter break, the plans of having a winter spirit week were unfortunately postponed due to student absences. After returning from break, more plans were underway.

In place of the winter spirit week plan, the ASB decided to throw a Basketball Spirit Week, focusing on celebrating the basketball players, and the love that both the school and community have for the sport. The week consisted of dress up days, cookies, and fun activities such as a scavenger hunt, basketball tournament, and a pep rally; all to prepare the seniors for their senior night game. However, the spirit week was foreseeably cut short by the announcement that school would be switching to remote online learning for the remainder of the week, due to an outbreak of COVID-19 illnesses.

The basketball games scheduled for the same week were postponed as well, and played two weeks later. Despite the gloomy mood of the student body, many still showed up to support their team in the last two home games of the 2022 season.

The student section at these games showed that Dayton High has not yet lost the incredible support and spirit that they are so well known for expressing at games. Though the Wolfpack games were not won, they were very memorable for the students, especially the senior class, since it was the last game of their high school careers.

The Associated Student Body (ASB) council went to work on arranging Valentine’s Day festivities. They passed out Valentines to the student body on Monday, which were purchased by students, for other students.

In addition to the typical school and sport activities, the ASB, Principal Kristina Brown, and school Counselor Caitlyn Patterson have been focusing on how to promote more selfcare, kindness, and positivity within the school. One way they have approached this is by organizing a monthly affirmation board for the students. Each month students write one positive thing about themselves on a piece of paper which are posted anonymously on a poster in the school’s commons to be seen as a whole. It is believed it is important to improve and maintain positivity in the way that students treat themselves, and each other; especially during these unsettled and trying times the world is in today.
